Even if we subtract the space we will need in the future for living and agricultural use, there would still be <strong>0.9 billion hectares<\/strong> left worldwide that could be planted. Utilizing this potential would mean planting forests that could sequester <strong>205 billion tonnes of carbon<\/strong>. This would enable us to make two-thirds of the carbon produced by humans \u2013 since the industrial revolution \u2013 disappear again.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<style id=\"kb-rowlayout_ff86a8-75\">#kt-layout-id_ff86a8-75{margin-top:25px;margin-bottom:0px;}#kt-layout-id_ff86a8-75 > .kt-row-column-wrap{padding-top:50px;padding-bottom:50px;max-width:960px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-rowlayout alignnone\"><div id=\"kt-layout-id_ff86a8-75\" class=\"kt-row-layout-inner kt-layout-id_ff86a8-75\"><div class=\"kt-row-column-wrap kt-has-2-columns kt-gutter-default kt-v-gutter-default kt-row-valign-middle kt-row-layout-left-golden kt-tab-layout-inherit kt-m-colapse-left-to-right kt-mobile-layout-row\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-column inner-column-1 kadence-column_089bed-89\"><div class=\"kt-inside-inner-col\">\n<h2 id=\"kt-adv-heading_b431bb-22\" class=\"kt-adv-heading_b431bb-22 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\"><strong>What happens if we do nothing?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2050 our forests will have shrunk by about <strong>223 million hectares<\/strong> and global warming will increase inexorably. The largest losses of forest area are occurring in the <strong>tropics<\/strong> of Africa, Latin America, and South and Southeast Asia. The planting of new forests has a great influence on the <strong>local climate<\/strong>. Newly planted forests in the south cause <strong>regional cooling through evaporation<\/strong>. In the north, higher temperatures would be the result, especially in the winter months. This is because the snow cover on trees, which is much less dense than that on the ground, <strong>reflects the sun&#8217;s rays less effectively<\/strong>. So where is actually the best place to plant trees? The answer is, exactly where the forests are currently disappearing the fastest: <strong>In the tropics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<style id=\"kb-rowlayout_05eba3-9b\">#kt-layout-id_05eba3-9b{margin-top:25px;margin-bottom:0px;}#kt-layout-id_05eba3-9b > .kt-row-column-wrap{padding-top:50px;max-width:960px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-rowlayout alignnone\"><div id=\"kt-layout-id_05eba3-9b\" class=\"kt-row-layout-inner kt-layout-id_05eba3-9b\"><div class=\"kt-row-column-wrap kt-has-2-columns kt-gutter-default kt-v-gutter-default kt-row-valign-middle kt-row-layout-left-golden kt-tab-layout-inherit kt-m-colapse-left-to-right kt-mobile-layout-row\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-column inner-column-1 kadence-column_57eb19-20\"><div class=\"kt-inside-inner-col\">\n<h2 id=\"kt-adv-heading_cae648-06\" class=\"kt-adv-heading_cae648-06 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\"><strong>Why the tropics?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Replanting in the tropics not only <strong>stops global warming<\/strong>, but also <strong>supports local farmers<\/strong>. Food and new jobs are created and the regional population can even use the freshly planted forest commercially for rattan palms, coffee and cocoa plants, for example. At the same time, further clearing is impeded.
